What is text neck syndrome?

The modern age brings about many advances in tech, health, and many other categories, but it also brings in its share of new problems. Take the smartphone, a device that has shrunk all the benefits of the computer to fit in the palm of our hands. All it takes to get on the internet is to reach into your pocket and pull out your phone. But the phone has introduced a new problem for the ages and that is text neck syndrome.

Text Neck Syndrome and it’s Causes

Text neck syndrome is a modern condition that arose with the dominance of handheld devices such as the smartphone. It refers to the repeated stress placed upon the neck when looking down at a handheld device. The repeated stress overtime causes pain and injury around the neck area. Also known as the turtle neck posture, this unhealthy posture increases the load that our necks carry for a prolonged amount of time.

On average, the human head weighs anywhere between ten and twelve pounds, but when at an angle, the amount of pressure the neck endures is anywhere between forty to 60 pounds–an amount of pressure that the neck cannot endure for long periods. Text neck syndrome takes a while to rear its ugly head, and when it does, it can be discomforting at a minimum and even painful.

Text Neck Symptoms

The neck and spine are complex and since text neck syndrome damages the cervical spine and upper back, specifically the vertebra C1-T5 it can lead to a variety of different issues. Here is a list of some of the issues that may arise from text neck.

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Radiating pain
  • Arthritis in the neck
  • Disc degeneration
  • Vision Problems

These are just some of the issues reported, but as the modern issue is further study medical scientists might find many more symptoms that might be attached to this syndrome.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Text neck syndrome might be a new condition, but the damage done to the spine is not unfamiliar to chiropractors. Schauder Chiropractic is no stranger to neck pain and back pain. The three stages of care still apply to pain and damage caused by text neck:

  1. Relief Care
  2. Corrective Care
  3. Wellness Care

Relief care will help involve us helping to reduce the pain and discomfort. Corrective care will have us proceed to correct the underlying conditions causing your pain and discomfort. Wellness care is a series of checkups that ensure that the healing is proceeding accordingly.

You do not have to relegate yourself to the pains of the modern day. Chiropractic care is a proven method that will help relieve the pain, heal the pain and help you keep it at bay.
